New Nintendo DSi - Quick Review & First Impressions

new_nintendo_dsi

Nintendo have always enjoyed success when producing handheld games devices. From the original Gameboy way back in the 1980’s to the risky release of the Nintendo DS some 5 years ago, the company have always managed to provide logical and enjoyable interfaces with which customers could play their favourite games on the move.

Enter the Nintendo Dsi.

This is not so much a new console as it is a fairly radical overhaul of the old one- it has bigger screens, an all-new SD card slot, a digital camera function and photo editing software. Nintendo have also removed the now-obsolete slot for Gameboy advance cartridges.

These changes have left us with a thinner, more attractive and importantly more useful DS.

However, the screens are only slightly bigger. And the digital camera is only able to take low-resolution pictures. So how can the Dsi be expected to sell?

Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi calls it “lateral thinking of withered technology”. It is his belief that more advanced technology is not essential to sales success; you need only to find new and exciting applications for existing software and hardware.

Anyone with half a brain can see how appealing that new photo editor (which gives you the chances to warp and morph pictures of your friends and relatives) might be to the younger generation.

Who knows? He might be right.

With no Dsi-specific software released yet, it’s difficult to say but hopefully in the coming months we’ll see lots of new games and software released online for download via the Dsi’s Wi-Fi function.
